Dark Lover - Wrapping My Brain Around The Phenomenon

Dark Lover, Black Dagger Brotherhood #1
JR Ward
Copyright 2005, Signet

My first venture into the Brotherhood!! Man, if this is your first trip - you've got a lot of little things to pick up on!! Here's the rundown, No Spoilers!

And guys, I know I post "reviews" but there's no way to review this. Or rave. Or anything really. The world is SO big and has so many players, I think I need to take a minute to wrap my brain around it all. So here we go!

There are Vampires. And Civilians. And Guardian Vampires (The Black Dagger Brotherhood). And then there are the evil soulless human-looking guys called Lessers.

What you should know:

Guardians are bigger, stronger, faster, deadlier than any of the others.

Guardians are sexy. Which is good, because they like sex.

Book 1 is focused on Wrath - who happens to be the King.

Well. It was a fun ride!! The first ninety pages or so I was a little worried that there was something wrong with me, how could I not be as obsessed with this book as literally everyone else I know is?! Well, welcome to page 91. Ok, I don't know if those are the exact pages, but it's pretty close!

Wrath has issues, like, been alive forever, lonely, blind-ish, rough childhood kind of issues. So when one of the brothers asks him to watch over their daughter...Wrath bumps. No way.

Only then he does. And this cocky, strong willed female? He likes her. Good news - she likes him! Yay!

They have a lot to go through, for instance; she has MAJOR daddy issues. She doesn't realize she's part vampire. Wrath is just starting to get kind of attached to this *shudder* human and she may not even live through the transition to vampire. And what if she does? He's a freaking KING. How can he be with her? What about the other brothers? All ten thousand of them!?

All in all, I enjoyed it a lot!! Once you start flipping pages, you really can't stop and you're intrigued by all of the brothers - how could you not be? A bunch of lethal, built, sexy vampire warriors?! Yes, Please!! I haven't picked a favorite yet, and although I liked Wrath, I'm not blind enough (har har) to say off the bat that he's my favorite. They all have a different flavor and I'm glad to say, I'll be continuing on with the Brotherhood a little bit longer! Hopefully by then I won't have such a scattered report to give you guys!

What were your thoughts?!

  1. Love this b/c I was scattered when I first read it as well. It was funny to me at first, but I loved it. Also, a secret - don't yell at me - whenever the POV switches to a lesser (Mr. X,O,Z,Y???) I skip it. I still understand the story without those parts. I know that is so wrong of me. I've read some of them, but I usually skip. Until later in series. Don't hate me JR Ward. I love the books. I *think* Rhage is my favorite, but as you read each brother's story, you love little things about all of them. So it's hard to pick. I'm doubting myself now...maybe Z...no, Rhage, def Rhage... :)

  2. Lynn-- we should have been texting!! I 100% agree with you in every aspect of this post. It honestly took me til' chapter 10 before I could get into the book, so many POV's it was hard for me to keep up. As soon as I chilled myself out and said quit focusing on that and just read, I did-- then I was sucked in and when I have time- I power read thru it. I have a feeling that Rhage (Hollywood) and Tohr will be my favorite BDBs.
