Comes out TODAY!
Thank you for the E-Galley given in exchange for an honest review!
Elyse Morgan's parents, and quite a large amount of the population of the world, have been killed by a disasterous plague known as the Black Death. Elyse has dedicated her life to it's cure, living in solitude on the island she calls home, life is mundane but she has a purpose. So imagine her surprise when armed men in uniform begin falling from the sky and killing everyone in sight. This is only the beginning.
After being tazed (which she is not happy about), kidnapped and drugged, Elyse finds herself being screamed at by some crazy drill sargent. For the exchange of her quiet life on the island, the preciding UN government will pay her, give her safe living quarters and unlimited resources - if she agrees to help them find the cure.
But she has more than just the cure to worry about. Her life is in danger and if she can't stay on her feet, she just may become concussed on the rock hard chest of her new Captain, Nicoli Marek. Ahh, Nicoli Marek, the young Captain is highly pursued by all the women on the ship but that's not surprising to Elyse; the man looks like a God. And boy was his chest warm! Alas, he's also engaged. Which means all bets are off.
With sarcasm, quick wit and an impossible amount of will-power, Elyse will continue to navigate the waters of medicine, friendship and the feelings she has to fight for the impossible Captain who seems to have taken a liking to aggravating her.
Even if she finds the cure for the Black Death, will it save her from the pain of heartbreak or can the good Captain find a way - other than giving her enough morphine to make her a drooling fool for the rest of her life- to save her from the slow torture she's enduring because of him?
This was my face as I read this book. My Nook has never seen so many notes posted. There are SO MANY words to describe how much I felt/loved/laughed while reading and none of them will come to my tongue...or fingers...since I'm typing...
Anna finds a way to pair the thrill of a life-threatened girl with a woman who will take none of the shit from anyone. And she does it in a way that will make you laugh out loud over and over again! Like this:
"I was inches from his face now, and even in the throes of anger, I could find no imperfection there - which irritated me hugely.
Also, he smelled nice.
My fit-throwing stunned the three to silence. Captain Marek, in particular, regarded me as if I had morphed into a breast-feeding reptile. No doubt he was unaccustomed to being addressed in such a manner. I felt certain he would adjust."
If you've ever had the pleasure of meeting Anna you know that she says things that are made of hilarious and is possibly the sweetest person on earth. Elyse has a lot of these traits. From "Face rearranging machines" to "Oops" you will be laughing out loud and wishing you could either BE her or be her best friend, this chick is ON it.
And Captain Marek isn't so bad himself!! The guy is respectful, persistant, gorgeous and unafraid to go after everything that he wants.
If you've read the WVMP series by Jeri Smith-Ready then you are no doubt a fan of Ciara Griffin, well I'm here to tell you that if you like Ciara you will LOVE Elyse. In the same way that she is sarcastic and hilarious, but also strong and morally upstanding, you may also find yourself thinking that you haven't seen a heroine quite as strong as Elyse since the last Victoria Dahl book you read. Yep. I'm going there. You guys know how much I love both Jeri and Victoria. Meet their love child, Anna Scarlett.
The world is set in the near-distant future and is built perfectly, you can feel the sand and texture of the uniforms, you understand where she is in the world and what the people around her mean to it. But by no means are you ever bombarded or feel that you have to skip over parts to keep going. You know when books do that? And you're like, I really don't care how many jewels are in that pillar that is never actually going to matter to this story? THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN.
Degrees of Wrong happily deprived me of dinner, sleep and time with my husband. Love love love love love it. I promise, you will laugh out loud and fall in love over and over again!
Here are just a FEW highlights from the tour stops this week!!
In Degrees of Wrong, it was done in such a way that I couldn’t help but smile or be frustrated along with Elyse. He’s an immensely likeable character and incredibly magnetic. The constant exchanges of banter between himself and Elyse are the highlight of the entire book. They range from intense to touching to absolute comedy gold. -- See the rest from Chicks With Crossbows!
Character Interview!
J: How do you feel about chocolate?
Lt. Horan: What do you mean, ‘How do I feel’? What’s to feel? That’s what’s wrong with this world. Everyone wants to talk about their feelings when they should be getting things done.
See what else Lt. Horan had to say on What's On The Bookshelf!
Author Interview! From Liana Brooks!
What's your favorite scene in DEGREES OF WRONG? Which one demanded your attention and begged to be written to the point where you couldn't wait to write it? We can put in a spoiler warning if we need to. :)
I really love the part where Elyse had to explain to Nicoli that she had accidentally assaulted Lt. Horan. I had the cheesiest grin on my face the entire time I wrote that scene, and any time I go back for edits I always crack up. I just can’t HALP it.
How about some mood music from The Fuma Files?
Matt Nathanson - Mercy
This song illustrates the tension between Nicoli and Elyse so well! Plus a few lines feel like they were written just for this book: "I need less drowning and more land" and "tie your hands and demand a salute." Perfect for this novel!
Who do YOU see as these awesome MC's??
Capt. Nicoli Marek - Joe Mangianello would be perfect as the yummy and chronically shirtless Nicoli. Seriously he should be shirtless all the time.
Personally, I agree with Nite Lite's picks!!
