Monstrous Beauty
Elizabeth Fama
Copyright 2012, Farrar Straus Giroux
There is a curse on the women in Hester's family. They die within days of giving birth to their daughters, each one left with the same gold heart necklace as the one before them. But Hester has looked through her family and has seen it happen enough times to know better - she's just not going to get close to anyone, because next is love...and then babies...and then death. And so she tries to supress her feelings for her best friend with rationality. Until, that is, she meets a guy who is so odd and yet so familiar that she loves him at once. What she doesn't know is just how well part of her really is connected with him.
Let me start by saying, this was not at all the book I was expecting. However, the cover is just as beautiful as the writing and story telling and it was a very quick read! I expected to read the whole story underwater, like watching The Little Mermaid! But Fama finds a way to take an incredible story about a mermaid and true love all while giving it legs.
I was pleasantly surprised with Monstrous Beauty! Although the plot had a lot of predictability, it didn't hamper my need to read on. The set of sub-characters is lively and intriguing as well as the backstory that fits into the present story. It will make the perfect beach read this summer! Definitely grab your copy and snuggle up somewhere with sand and water and prepare to fall in love.

I LOVED this book. So much more than I expected to. Talk about deep and dark and awesome.
